Can California Beat Big Pharma?

It is a serious problem that Americans can’t afford the drugs they need. But the state of California passed a bill in 2020 to start allowing the state to begin producing its own generic drugs to make them more affordable.

As it stands, a vial of insulin that costs $30 in Canada runs about $450 in the US. Prescription drugs have risen three times faster than inflation in the last decade. Even generic drugs have seen price hikes that beat rising inflation.

Cal Rx, a state-sponsored prescription drug label, will be making cheaper generic drugs that aren’t covered by a patent. Hopefully, California’s trailblazing will help save money and lives and other states will follow suit.
