Could REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD) Be An Early Indicator Of Parkinson’s?

During REM sleep, most people’s bodies are effectively paralyzed. This prevents them from acting out their dreams. People with REM Sleep Behavior Disorder do not have this paralysis and act out their dreams without knowing it.

Researchers have found a link between RBD and Parkinson’s disease. People suffering from RBD have a much higher chance of developing Parkinson’s disease, the study found.

Where this may prove beneficial is in early assessment of Parkinson’s. Current methods of testing for Parkinson’s are complex and costly. Testing for RBD, however, would be quick and far less expensive.
