Researchers have found that in lab animals, certain nutrient-restricting diets can help the animals live longer and suffer less from age-related illnesses. Could this work for humans as well?
Unfortunately, the answer right now seems to be “no.” Some of these diets may have beneficial effects for some people, but for others the effects may actually be detrimental.
One of the problems is that the lab animals that are tested are housed in pathogen-free environments, whereas our lifestyles are not so immaculate. There are also differences in metabolism and lifespan.
Additionally, nutrient-restricting diets in humans can lead to a variety of adverse side effects.
