Some, but not all, Georgia residents are protected from the surprise medical bills that often come from visits to the emergency room. A new federal law seeks to take care of those not currently protected.
The current law only protects those enrolled in plans that are regulated by the state of Georgia. Anyone with private insurance can still be hit by surprise medical bills.
The new federal law will come into effect in January of 2022.
