The Need For More Frequent Visits From Physicians At Nursing Homes

Nursing homes are facing a crisis with the problem of reimbursed physician visits. Currently set at the old 1970’s model of once-per-30-day visits by a physician, with the added difficulty of dealing with COVID-19 in nursing homes, a new daily model is now becoming a necessity.

The Medicare and Medicaid physician visit frequency and reimbursement are woefully inadequate. Increased frequency and reimbursement would actually prevent unnecessary hospitalizations and lead to shorter patient stays and improved outcomes.

Many managed-care companies have already recognized this necessity and have started to make adjustments. Hopefully, Medicare and Medicaid will start adopting these practices as well.
