Due to our heavy reliance on animal farming, our livestock now makes up more than 10x the number of wildlife animals. Unfortunately, the selective breeding of livestock has made them severely inbred and extremely vulnerable to ever-changing infectious diseases.
Lacking genetic variation makes it difficult for our livestock to evolve to fight off infectious organisms as they would in the wild. This may become a worse and worse problem as organisms like the COVID-19 virus continue to grow and evolve.
One way to combat this growing threat is to reintroduce genetic diversity into our livestock, giving them a better chance to fight these diseases.
