There Is Now A Neonatal Wearable That Detects Jaundice

Jaundice in newborns can be a serious issue that can lead to severe medical conditions. It affects 60-80% of all newborns and can lead to brain damage and even death. Jaundice is easily treatable with blue light, which breaks down the bilirubin, but only if caught in time.

Now, there is a way to monitor babies to ensure they are treated promptly. Japanese researchers have developed a wearable sensor that can monitor babies for bilirubin levels, pulse rate and blood oxygen saturation.

While still in the testing stage, researchers hope to eventually reduce the size and thickness of the device, as well as increasing its accuracy.
